2009

Its been a while, my lack of posts are due to the hatred for blogger, more than anything else.
this year i have decided to grow heritage varieties where possible. click on the image for a better view

soil ready for sweet corn and pumpkins, i looked into growing the three sisters method of growing sweetcorn, squash, and runnerbeans, but decided to just grow sweetcorn and pumpkins as the runnerbeans have a different home already, although i may pop a couple in as an experiment.

carrots (market garden left over from last year) growing in the only raised bed i have, it was prepared by removing 18 inches of soil, this was backfilled with a mixture of well rotted and fresh horse dung, topped off with last years compost and a few bags of brought compost.the idea of the bed was to be used for delicate and fast growing items.i am not a lover of making boxes all over the plot and footpaths.

garlic coming along

lettuce grown inbetween the pea canes, the peas are victorian colossal they can reach 8 foot high and you pick them like runnerbeans. or so they say.

more pea canes, peas sown 9 may.

i was kindly given a gooseberry bush last year and this image represents my first and only gooseberry.
i will try to update more often, if i can master the blogger.

Welcome

You have stumbled on my little corner of the Internet, my virtual allotment.
i have been on the council waiting list for an allotment near my home for over two years.

i enjoy photography and gardening, my gardening has become more and more important to me for vegetables now i have four children, i want them to eat fresh, wholesome food.
i cannot stand the processed meals and muck that the supermarkets have weened most people on to, as far as i am concerned they are the main reason there is so much obesity in children and so much waste being produced, with all their shrink wrapping and boxes, take a joint of beef it is in a plastic tray then shrink wrapped and then placed in a plastic box with shrink wrap, WHY, so they can keep it on the shelf either in the warehouse or in the shop longer.
none of their veg is fresh its all a week old or more before it arrives in the shop. they argue that we, the customer wants it that way, i say bollocks we don't.
i have been growing veg in pots and tubs, hanging baskets and boxes in anything that works i have some ornamental trees in pots and under them i have grown broccoli, carrots, beetroot etc.
i have never grown enough to keep us from going without "but every little helps" and ever bit i can grow myself i don't have to give to the greedy supermarkets helping there little bit to the tune of billions.
last year she who must be obeyed, allowed me to steal some of the grass to grow more veg on, although this was just a ploy to moan at me whenever she wanted about taking over the garden, a few well chosen words did the trick (yes dear) that's all it takes, we have been married 15 years this year, just on yes dear.
so i moved my old plastic throw away greenhouse to its new plot and covered the holes in the plastic mesh with new plastic that i gratefully received from work, then lined (well sort of) the inside with bubble wrap also recycled from work, and its working well.
i fenced off the area and put up plastic netting to stop the frigging cats from poo-ing in my tubs and containers, i lost strawberries and peas last year and got cat shit in return, i love all animals except the ones that kill my plants and shit in my soil, so far they have not invaded my territory
i have sown loads compared to previous years. I'm hoping to finally get an allotment this year so i can give even less to the supermarkets.
i also make my own burgers, sausages, pies, jam and ice cream and yogurt more about this later
